Additional Information:
Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center is a 490-bed tertiary care center, recognized for excellence in areas such as stroke and heart care, cancer treatment, orthopedics, women’s services, pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, emergency and trauma, critical care, neurosciences, home health, hospice, and medical research. We’re home to the region’s first bone marrow, pancreas and kidney transplant programs, and will soon have the state’s first and only liver transplant program.

Avera McKennan in 2007 received HealthGrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, placing Avera McKennan in the top 5 percent of all hospitals in the United States. Avera McKennan also received five-star ratings from HealthGrades for clinical excellence in total hip replacement, hip fracture repair, pulmonary services, treatment of pneumonia, treatment of sepsis, treatment of respiratory failure and stroke care.

Avera McKennan is one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Solucient®, part of Thomson Healthcare, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. This award objectively identifies hospitals in five categories that are the highest performers in the nation, based on a scorecard of nine key organization-wide measures.

Avera McKennan is the only organization in 2007 to receive four Premier Awards for Quality from Premier, Inc. Avera McKennan received Premier Awards in four of six categories, including hip and knee procedures, pneumonia, heart failure and acute myocardial care. Premier awards recognize leading health care organizations that provide outstanding patient care at a significantly reduced cost and consistently set the standard in clinical excellence nationwide.

Avera McKennan is one of only 238 hospitals nationwide to be honored through the Magnet Recognition Program®. The designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center recognizes quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice.

Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center holds Joint Commission accreditation as a hospital, as well as certification for stroke care and hip and knee replacement surgery. Avera McKennan also holds three-year accreditation through CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Avera Health is the nation’s only health network to be named among the 100 “Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems” and the top 25 “Most Wireless” hospitals in 2006. Avera is the only health care organization in South Dakota to receive either ranking. The designation recognizes how the nation’s hospitals use information technologies for quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues.

With gross revenues and assets in excess of $1 billion, Avera holds a solid position in the regional health care market. As a health system, we have spent $400 million in the past five years in capital, enhancing our infrastructure and providing innovative programs throughout our region. In the next 10 years, we plan on investing $800 million in capital expenditures throughout our region. Avera is the only health care system in the region to receive consistently high ratings for financial management. As an indication of our financial health, Moody’s rates us A1, and Standard and Poors, A+.

Last year, the Avera family provided multi-millions of dollars in charity care and community benefit. As a not-for-profit health care organization, Avera partners with the communities we serve to promote health and wellness. Avera pours value into local communities throughout our five-state region through donations, community health services, subsidized services, community building activities, health research, health professional education, and by providing care to all people, regardless of ability to pay.

Avera colleagues work for South Dakota’s largest private employer. We have more than employees and physicians, serving 228 locations and 82 communities in a five-state region. At Avera McKennan, we have nearly 4,600 employees who serve 67 communities. System-wide inpatient and clinic visits numbered upwards of 1,890,000 in the last fiscal year; a number equal to nearly twice the population of the Avera service area.

Avera McKennan’s enduring legacy reaches back nearly 100 years. Our sponsors, the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, S.D., and the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, S.D., first responded to the health care needs of the frontier Dakota Territory. We continue to chart new frontiers in health care today, implementing advanced technologies to provide the safest, highest quality of care, in the compassionate tradition of our sponsors.

As a health care industry leader, we’re committed to patient-focused technology. This includes Avera eICU® CARE, the first multi-state and multi-system provider of telemedicine intensive care services in the nation. Avera eICU facilities have contributed to a 60 to 80 percent reduction in severity-adjusted hospital mortality for ICU patients compared to predictions.

Avera McKennan is a health care industry quality leader, and recent studies prove high quality equals high value. Avera McKennan is among only 260 hospitals in 26 states participating in the CMS – Premier Hospital Quality Initiative Demonstration Project. Results from this study show that the quality practices we follow, if implemented nationally, could: • Trim hospital costs by up to $1 billion • Save up to 3,000 lives • Result in 6,000 fewer medical complications and 500,000 fewer patient hospital days Avera McKennan colleagues’ many continual process and service excellence projects keep health care costs low and provide exceptional value.

Avera offers the only inpatient behavioral health services in eastern South Dakota. Featuring the state-of-the-art 110-bed Avera Behavioral Health Center in Sioux Falls, Avera demonstrates our commitment to the treatment of mental illness, addiction and substance abuse.
